Either way, it's better than old VHS videos. It's actually better because it preserves them on the laptop and you can either make a DVD for backup storage or record to a flash drive. The VidBox is very easy to use though, no big problem setting it up and easy to follow instructions as it leads you through the setup. I could definitely play them on my MBP on which they were recorded, so again, it might be some incompatibility with old and new technology, but it did give me a way to preserve old family videos. The only problem, and it might be the DVDs, is that some of the DVDs would not play on a DVD player to view on TV. The technology is old and this helped me record them to my MacBook Pro and then copy them to a DVD. I bought this because my VHS/DVD player wasn't able to dub videos to dvd any more.
The VidBox saved the day.and the recordings!
